Field Notes: Herb Shops in New York City

You wouldn’t know unless you’re looking but there are a ton of places to source herbs in New York City across the five boroughs.

If you know your way around Flushing there are many places to pick up mushrooms and other traditional Chinese herbal medicines. I’ve also heard great things about Sundial Herbs up in the Bronx where you might find all kinds of tropical plant-based remedies.

Still, there are a few places I call my favorite, the ones I keep coming back to. I’ve compiled a list of them below – this list is by no means exhaustive, and if there’s an herb shop in your neighborhood that I missed, I encourage you to check it out as well!

  1. Radicle Herb Shop
Location: Boerum Hill – 394 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY
Knowledgeable herbalists & high quality herbs.

This place is the top of the list for me. The folks that work there are really lovely – most of them are past or current students at Arbor Vitae so they really know their stuff if you have any questions or need recommendations. You can get your own herbal tea blend mixed for you – or a tincture, if that’s what you prefer. The people that own the shop are really lovely and truly believe in what they are doing – part of the reason they’ve started stocking some of Foster Farm’s herbs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Mountain Rose enthusiast – but this locally sourced stuff is so fresh it will blow your mind.
  2. Flower Power
Location: East Village – 406 E 9th St, New York, NY
An east village treasure, been around since 1993.

Flower power has been around the longest of any herb shop I know of in the city. As a result, the ladies I’ve talked to there really know their stuff and are super helpful. They have an incredible selection of herbs and if anywhere else is out of stock, they’re usually the ones I try next. In addition to their impressive stock they also have a ton of other plant based products and remedies from gem infusions to flower essences. If you’re in the area, they’re worth checking out.
  3. Remedies Herb Shop
Location: Carrol Gardens – 453 Court St, Brooklyn, NY
    Good selection, and classes galore.
In addition to having a plethora of herbs and natural products, there are a ton of classes taught here. All of the shops on this list offer classes from time to time and their calendars are worth keeping an eye on, but Remedies in Carroll Gardens usually has the most active and diverse calendar in my experience, especially if you’re interest in crafting your own herbal remedies and products. It’s a welcoming environment, and if you’re interested in any of the classes there I recommend you give them a shot!
  4. Catland
Location: Bushwick – 987 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY
Double double, toil and trouble. Herbs and everything else a witch need
Last but certainly not least is Catland. This shop is a bit different from the others – rather than just being a place to buy herbs, Catland carries everything the aspiring witch needs, from black cohosh root to arcane books and raccoon skulls. It’s the place to go for anything you might need to cast a spell, or get some mystical insight into your future or a decision you having coming up, if that’s your sort of thing. Since their primary focus isn’t herbs their selection, though decent, isn’t as extensive as some of the other shops on this list. Still, they have a lot besides herbs to offer and are worth checking out.
